Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. The actress was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was young her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning girl and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She left the school she was attending after only two years to pursue the profession of acting. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got a job in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs were offered to her. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. In Boston, she earned a living as an usherette by day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
